Copyright includes the sole right to reproduce a work, or a substantial part of it. Original literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works (such as books, magazines, manuals, photographs, paintings, sheet music, etc.) are protected by copyright.

The period for copyright protection differs depending on the type of work and who created it. In Canada, for most works, the period begins with the creation of the work, and extends for the life of the author plus 50 years from the end of the calendar year in which the author died.

The Commons on Flickr

The Galt Museum & Archives is contributing to The Commons on Flickr as part of our ongoing mission to engage and educate our communities in the human history of southwestern Alberta by preserving and sharing collections, stories and memories that define our collective identity and guide our future.

Our reasoning also matches the objectives of The Commons:

  1. To increase access to publicly-held photography collections, and
  2. To provide a way for the general public to contribute information and knowledge

The photographs featured on The Commons on Flickr come from the Archives' holdings and, to the best of our knowledge, there are no copyright restrictions associated with them. They are intended for private reference and research, and the Galt Museum & Archives cannot assume liability for any other use of these photographs.

We are committed to observing copyright law. If the Galt Museum & Archives has inadvertently infringed on the intellectual property rights of copyright holders with respect to these photographs, please don't hesitate to contact us with specific details at:
